Our Story

Maliki, nicknamed Miki aka Salty Dog, is my inspiration for starting Salty Dog Sanctuary. Several homeless teenagers had a mama dog that had pups, I’m not sure what happened to the mama dog or the other pups. But one of the teenagers showed up at my door teary eyed asking if I could take her in, stating her name was Dingo. I took her in and as I had two dogs, my neighbor asked if she could take her.

After several incidents and bites with my neighbor I took her back into my care, and this became the best friendship in my lifetime. Maliki stands for Dingo in Australian aborigine and why I named her this. She became my constant companion for years to come. She learned to skateboard, climb trees, and enjoyed games (peek-a-boo being her favorite). Our most valued and loved moments were shared on the beaches of Florida during sunrise and sunset. She passed several years ago, and my heart will never be the same.
